Articulate Storyline

Op Learning Technologies en ASTD lieten de mannen van Articulate een nieuwe e-learning auteurstool zien; Articulate Storyline. Een uitgebreide beta test is al enkele maanden aan de gang. De laatste berichten zijn dat Storyline beschikbaar komt eind januari 2012. Hierbij wat informatie verzameld vanaf het web en vanuit een demo bij een grote Articulate klant in België.
Positionering Storyline
Uit de presentatie van Articulate en alle mensen die tot nu toe over het onderwerp hebben gepubliceerd wordt duidelijk dat Storyline een product is wat op een andere doelgroep mikt dan Studio. Storyline bevat een groot aantal voorzieningen voor professionele ontwikkelaars. voorbeelden zijn: een tijdslijn, publicatielagen, variabelen. Een andere opvallende toevoeging is de ingebouwde screen recorder. Alles tezamen mikt Articulate hiermee op onder andere Adobe Captivate maar zeker ook op Lectora.
Ook voor Apple iPhone en iPad
Minstens zo belangrijk als het nieuwe product zelf was de technologie van de nieuwe player. Deze is in staat de Storyline cursussen zowel op een standaard Windows PC en een Apple Mac af te spelen als op de mobiele platformen van Apple: de iPod Touch, iPhone en iPad. Deze player komt ook beschikbaar voor een nieuwe versie van Articulate Studio. Hoewel geen datum werd genoemd gaat de Articulate community uit van een nieuwe versie (Studio 12) begin 2012.

What is Storyline?
Storyline is a standalone desktop authoring tool that provides e-learning authors amazing flexibility and advanced features while maintaining Articulate Studio / PowerPoint ease of use. You’ll have amazing flexibility and control with rapid development ease-of-use.
When will Storyline ship?
Our intent is to ship in summer 2011. Of course, that is tentative and subject to change
What is the expected price of Storyline?
We anticipate that Storyline will be priced similar to Studio ’09 Pro. Subject to change, of course.
Is Studio going away?
On the contrary. Articulate Studio remains core to our strategy of empowering e-learning. In fact, our engineering teams are already working on the next version of Studio and some of its features will knock your socks off. We expect to ship the next Studio by end of year.
Will Storyline content work on my iPhone and iPad?
Yes, Storyline will be able to publish iOS-compatible output via HTML5.
Does the HTML5 output in Storyline support X, Y or Z?
Our goal is that over time our HTML 5 output will support as many features as possible as in the Flash version. However, it must happen in stages because,
1) the HTML5 spec is a moving target, and
2) the various browsers support HTML5 to varying degrees.
It's just too early to comment on which features will be supported when.
When can I see screenshots or a demo?
Hopefully soon. We’re still moving things around in the UI and it’s premature to post anything until this settles.

What do you think are the most strength points of Articulate products?
Articulate products have been very highly regarded as being simple to use. That doesn’t come by accident. We spend lots of time during our product development cycle to ensure our software is intuitive and easy to use. We also work with a broad range of users to ensure we’ve created a workflow that fulfils the rapid authoring promise. It’s one thing to create a pretty user interface. But, if you also don’t focus on workflow optimization, then you’ve only solved half the riddle.
Can you tell us why will be Storyline a game changer?
Storyline will enable non-programmers to create highly engaging and very interactive elearning with PowerPoint or Articulate Studio user-interface ease. With Storyline, anyone will be able to create dazzling courses that until Storyline - only Flash programmers, seasoned instructional designers, and high end, custom services organizations were able to create. When you combine that with a price point that is very affordable, there is no doubt that Storyline will change the rules of rapid elearning authoring.
Are Storyline and Studio complementary or does the use of one product precludes the other?
Some customers will choose Studio, others will choose Storyline, and some will choose both. That’s fine with us. Both are strategic offerings. They each offer outstanding and unique attributes. It really depends on the needs of the customer. The good news is that they play nicely together.
Could you comment on Storyline capabilities compared to Captivate?
We certainly would be happy to welcome Adobe Captivate users to the Articulate community. Of course, Storyline will offer so much more than animated screen captures and I think it will be very evident for Captivate users who take a look at Storyline, what new things they’ll be able to do. And, Articulate Storyline customers also get Articulate support and the Articulate Community. You don’t get that with Captivate.
